“35 ko passing marks tho bana diya..lekin 70 ke neeche admission hi nahi milta..tho 70 ko hi passing marks bana do..kamse kam 2nd attempt to de sa-ke!”

A movie based on our ever declining education system..FALTU..and as a student of Mumbai University & GLC I can vouch that it’s not even gonna stabilise anytime (forget rising)..we all recognise it..we all crib..we all want change..we all want people to make a difference..when someone is trying to do just that..show u the difference..u shun it off as “Wateve”

Y people wouldn’t like it is beyond me..its got an awesome moral..in a little twisted and fun way..if not the oldies at least the youth should’ve appreciated it

Sorry Mr. Jackie Bhagnani..despite the following stalwarts voting for the cause shown in the movie..people still wanna listen to Aamir Khan only:
- Arshad Warsi
- Ritesh Deshmukh
- Boman Irani
- Remo D’Souza
- DJ Suketu
- Manish Malhotra
- Mithun Chakraborty
etc.

Sorry guy..despite these eminent stars who are № 1 in their fields endorsing ur cause..people wanna act all cool and say “No..it was OK”..they can love 7 priyanka chopras but all these people aren’t enough! People will say “oh this topic is cliched now”..really now? If it was so cliched y don’t I see a better Mumbai University or a better GLC? I still get KTs for random reasons..I still get marks by fluke..someone writes the song of DDLJ in an engineering paper n gets a 80..and its all cool rite?

We all know Dabangg was so big only coz of Salman..but that doesn’t mean the star cast prejudices your choice of a movie or whether u like it or not.

There is a dance sequence performed in the movie..by actors who have been bandaged as mummies..u can’t see their faces..u only see pure dance..that’s when u appreciate..give a standing ovation..applaud..but as soon as u see the real faces..the guys get slapped..really now? Is the face soooo bad..or ur racist against “non-star” people?

I’m not saying the movie was perfect in all its cinematic aspects..maybe its technicalities could’ve been improved..but look at the bigger picture people..see the message..see the motive..watch the movie..give it a chance with an open mind (at least try to)

According to ancient history, a grouping of seven islands comprising Colaba, Mazagaon, Old Woman’s Island, Wadala, Mahim, Parel, and Matunga-Sion formed a part of the kingdom of Ashoka the Great of Magadh, ironically in North India.

The Bhaiyas and Biharis whom the Thackerays accuse of being outsiders in Mumbai, come from the region, which was a part of Ashoka the Great’s empire.. We judge everything according to history and the history of Mumbai proves that its earliest known ownership was with a North Indian.

The seven islands of Mumbai passed through many hands, the sultans of Gujarat, the Portuguese and the British. Every ruler left behind proof of residence in Mumbai.

The Mauryans left behind the Kanheri, Mahakali and the caves of Gharapuri more popularly called Elephanta.

The sultans of Gujarat built the Dargahs at Mahim and Haji Ali, the Portuguese built the two Portuguese churches, one at Prabhadevi and the other St Andrews at Bandra.

They built forts at Sion, Mahim, Bandra and Bassien. The Portuguese named the group of seven Islands ‘Bom Baia’, Good Bay. The British built a city out of the group of seven islands and called her Bombay.

The original settlers of the seven islands, the Koli fishermen, worshiped Mumbaidevi, her temple still stands at Babulnath near Chowpatty. The Kolis called the island Mumbai, ‘Mumba, Mother Goddess’.

In 1662, King Charles II of England married the Portuguese Princess Catherine of Braganza, and received the seven islands of Bom Baia as part of his dowry. Six years later, the British Crown leased the seven islands to the English East India Company for a sum of 10 pounds in gold per annum. It was under the English East India Company that the future megapolis began to take shape, after the first war for independence Bombay once again became a colony of the British Empire.

History has forgotten this but the first Parsi settler came to Bombay in 1640, he was Dorabji Nanabhoy Patel. In 1689-90, a severe plague epidemic broke out in Bombay and most of the European settlers succumbed to it. The Siddi of Janjira attacked in full force. Rustomji Dorabji Patel, a trader and the son of the city’s first Parsi settler, successfully defeated the Siddi with the help of the Kolis and saved Bombay.

Gerald Aungier, Governor of Bombay built the Bombay Castle, an area that is even today referred to as Fort. He also constituted the Courts of law. He brought Gujarati traders, Parsi shipbuilders, Muslim and Hindu manufacturers from the mainland and settled them in Bombay.

It was during a period of four decades that the city of Bombay took shape. Reclamation was done to plug the breach at Worli and Mahalakshmi, Hornby Vellard was built in 1784. The Sion Causeway connecting Bombay to Salsette was built in 1803. Colaba Causeway connecting Colaba island to Bombay was built in 1838. A causeway connecting Mahim and Bandra was built in 1845.

Lady Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, the wife of the First Baronet Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy donated Rs 1, 57,000 to meet construction costs of the causeway. She donated Rs. 1,00,000 at first. When the project cost escalated and money ran out half way through she donated Rs 57,000 again to ensure that the vital causeway was completed. Lady Jamsetjee stipulated that no toll would ever be charged for those using the causeway. Today Mumbaikars have to pay Rs 75 to use the Bandra-Worli Sealink, connecting almost the same two islands. Sir J J Hospital was also built by Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy.

The shipbuilding Wadia family of Surat was brought to Bombay by the British. Jamshedji Wadia founded the Bombay Port Trust and built the Princess Dock in 1885 and the Victoria Dock and the Mereweather Dry Docks in 1891. Alexandra Dock was built in 1914.

A Gujarati civil engineer supervised the building of the Gateway of India. The Tatas made Bombay their headquarters and gave it the iconic Taj Mahal Hotel and India’s first civilian airlines, Air India. The Godrejs gave India its first vegetarian soap.

Cowasji Nanabhai Daver established Bombay’s first cotton mill, ‘The Bombay Spinning Mills’ in 1854. By 1915, there were 83 textile mills in Bombay largely owned by Indians.

This brought about a financial boom in Bombay. Although the mills were owned by Gujaratis, Kutchis, Parsis and Marwaris, the workforce was migrant Mahrashtrians from rural Maharashtra. Premchand Roychand, a prosperous Gujarati broker founded the Bombay Stock Exchange. Premchand Roychand donated Rs 2,00,000 to build the Rajabai Tower in 1878.

Muslim, Sindhi and Punjabi migrants have also contributed handsomely to Mumbai.

Mumbai is built on the blood and sweat of all Indians. That is why Bombay belongs to all Indians.

Apart from its original inhabitants, the Kolis, everyone else in Mumbai, including Thackeray’s ‘Marathi Manoos’, are immigrants.

The “Mumbai for Marathi Manoos” war cry has once again been raised to shore up the sagging political fortunes of the Thackeray family.

When the Shiv Sena-BJP combine came to power in 1993, under the guise of reverting to the original name they replaced Bombay with Mumbai.

I wonder when they will discard the anglicized Thackeray and revert back to their original Marathi surname Thakre?

Ashutosh Govariker has made some landmark movies…classics…etched his name in the history of Bollywood with “Jodhaa Akbar”, “Lagaan” & “Swades”. He always focused on epoch topics & those that people felt for and could relate to. But I guess the most cliched idiom – “Everyone makes mistakes” – holds true here.”What’s Your Rashee” was supposed to be his first comedy. But it was the most disastrous movie ever made. Even “Love Story 2050″ & “Dil Bole Hadippa” were bearable.

I strongly believe that film-makers put a lot of hard work in creating entertainment. They deserve appreciation and that if a movie has touched the audience in even a minuscule way, they can claim to be successful. So for me to dislike a movie is a rare occasion….and to want to pull my hair out and go kill the director atleast 20 times while in the cinema hall, is total newbie.

3 hours 45 minutes of pure torture. I’d like to make it clear that Priyanka Chopra did a commendable job. She convinced me that she was playing 12 different roles. Harman Baweja too was not the reason of my misery. The two may have signed the film, purely cause of Ashutosh’s previous record, and they can’t be blamed for that. But Ashutosh and his wife (the co-producer)….what the hell were they thinking? They seem to be living in some sort of mirage…completely overflowing with every stupid concept that Bollywood can come up with & thought that the world experiences these things and a movie with ALL of these aspects, that proved to make great movies in the past will be ‘legen-(wait for it)-dary’. The list (NOT EXHASUTIVE IN ANY WAY) is as follows:
1. Orthodox parents wanting their daughter to marry an NRI
2. A girl pretending to be mad so that she can find out if the guy is only after her money or is truly interested in her
3. An outgoing girl who wants to date atleast for a year before getting married…so that she can fall in love
4. A girl who thinks that the guy was her lover from the last life
5. Child marriage
6. A girl fell in love with a guy, went all the way with him only to be ditched by him…”kaun usse shaadi karega?”
7. A “jogan” hungry for physical passion
8. A Dr. who wants to work for the children in villages
9. A girl who already has a boyfriend so wants the guy to reject her
and I should get an award for remembering these ridiculous concepts…but there are concepts worse than these that the movie ‘boasts’ about.

Mr. Director, don’t try and fool the audience by big banners & no story (haven’t you learnt your lesson from Yash Raj Films)…make movies that fit in your genre & don’t try a wannabe David Dhawan.

If you get paid to watch the movie DON’T GO. If it comes in TV, CHANGE THE CHANNEL. DON’T SPEND ANY TIME OR ENERGY ON THIS ONE. This movie cannot be appreciated in any way.

What is an examination? It is a test of your understanding of the subject, coupled with the amount of hard work that you have put in. All universities & educational institutions around the world have formulated a way of doing so. But somehow Mumbai University has not been able to reach that stage.

Every time the results come, the students do not bother about whether they’ve done well or not. Their main concern is whether they’ve passed or no. Is the intellectual level of these students so low that they don’t expect or is it that their hard work and understanding is left to the mood of the person who corrects the papers? People who got 90% in their Std. 10 & Std. 12 and put in as much hard work in the preparations for the exams do not get any returns? How, why is it that only a few students consistently do well, the others fall below average? These results are not a reflection of anything…neither their intelligence neither their hard work. In fact even the recruiters are aware of this fact and do not rely upon these results.

Moreover, the teachers also aren’t exceptionally good. Only a handful of them have the capacity of attracting a good strength of students. So what is this educational institution striving to do? What is it achieving at the end of the day? It gives millions of students degrees that are just pieces of paper that are of value only till the time they get a job. Then they don’t care to say that they studied from Mumbai University. Comparatively, students from other renowned universities love boasting about their education.

It’s about time the university mend its ways. People have reached a stage where they do not only doubt the credibility of the university, but have also lost faith in this institution.

I’ve heard all this…I know all this…I believe all this. Then why do I still feel dejected? Why do I feel like a failure? Why do I feel like I don’t have it in me anymore? This university is out to lower people’s self esteem & instead of creating great professionals who will be brilliant in the real world, they are creating small mice, who are scared of coming into the real world because they know that they are unprepared.

Yesterday I watched New York with family & friends. The movie was really touching & made everyone feel for those who were detained & tortured as suspects of terrorist-links after the 9/11 incident. The director did a great job in keeping the audience engrossed. He took them into the lives of such people & made them feel what they would do if they were in such a situation. Yet after the movie was over, everyone said the movie was OK. They refused to comment on it. Why?

We all watch Bollywood movies for fun & entertainment. And at the same time we try and resist their effect on us.

Most of us have become so heartless and so in our own worlds that we don’t want to feel what the director is trying to show. We think its “uncool” to say a movie is great. The maximum that we would say is that the movie was “OK”. Why can’t we freely express what we feel & why do we have to behave like robots?

Who are we trying to fool? Can we really be emotionless from deep within? Can we really be unaffected by any audio-visual we’ve seen? Since we were in Junior Kindergarten we have been taught in the way of photographic memory. No one teaches such a kid that an apple is a red coloured fruit that is sweet to taste…one shows it to them. “A” says “Apple” & the picture is right there. We will remember these things taught to us when we could barely understand what the world is like, till we die. If such basic audio-visuals can have such a deep impact on us then how can advanced technology like movies that make the experience as real as it can get, not affect us?

Till yesterday I thought that we only have to deal with terrorists. But now “Battlefield Mumbai” includes Mumbai University as the other enemy.

I was in college, eagerly waiting for my Sem V results, when I found out that only 20 people got above 60%. Half my batch got an ATKT in at least one subject. Then came the highlight of the show. There was a “Torts group” and a “Contracts group”. 15 people in a row got KTs in these subjects. And these people included those who were supposed to be the smart ones of our college. Lol! It was hilarious! Unbelievable!

From among my friends, one girl was really lucky. She has always scored well and this time too it was not different. She was the 2nd highest of my batch. But one guy, who used to get 75-80% suddenly came out with a 56%! Hello! Are those people correcting our papers drunk? Do they realise this is not a game! Its our life!

Are you not getting paid well? Or are you not qualified enough to understand what I’ve written? Okay…lets give you a break. Maybe you don’t need to be educated enough. You just have to follow the model answers given to you. But then who frames these model answers? We read all that we are asked to read, learn all that we can possibly learn. and what do we get in return? A score, way below average?

Our contracts professor taught us that subject so well that the basics are drilled into my head. Maybe I won’t remember the correct section but I will surely be able to tell what is legal and what is not, according to the Indian Contracts Act, 1971. But when the paper comes…questions from only the last 20 pages of our text our asked. What are they testing? Our mugging power…aren’t they supposed to test whether we got the gist of the subject right or not? I know at least 30 people who have just passed in contracts, mostly those who sincerely attended lectures to understand what the subject was all about.

Its about time the law faculty of the university woke up! Do you need more money? Hike our fees…its fine! But please stop playing with our lives. When I go for an interview, the recruiter is not going to ask me “How did you fair in comparison to the rest?” He is just going to ask me, “How did you fair?” A student who got 90% in ICSE (Std. 10) and 89% in IB (Std. 12) is not even managing a 60%. “What happened to you kid? Did you start taking drugs or what?” “No Sir! Those who corrected my papers were high when they did!”

Since I have come from an international curriculum, I have always been accustomed to being tested on my knowledge and ability of dealing with and understanding the subject. Thus when the paper pattern was changed from Objective to Subjective I was completely for it. I thought at least now my skills and knowledge would be tested. But I guess I expected a bit too much from this ancient university. Now I realise, it only has the caliber of correcting objective type questions…they don’t have to test their own knowledge of the subject, neither do they have to rely on their mood for giving the poor student marks. If the student is right, he’s right…if he’s wrong, he’s wrong!

Why do you think people prefer IB to HSC? Only because IB respects and treats the student as he is supposed to be be treated. It teaches the student to realise his ability to capture from his environment, learn and grow. I don’t think I’ve learned anything more in the past 2 and half years in GLC (except for my Contracts lectures, which I’ll never forget) than what I did in my years at Ambani.

We want to learn…we students really want to learn and be tested in a manner that we deserve! Not this bullshit where I need to pay Rs.500 extra per paper for re-evaluation, when my paper will actually be corrected in a manner it is supposed to be (that too I doubt).

After 26/11 all that we’ve been doing is blame. First we blamed the politicians for not giving us security. Then we blamed Pakistan for not cooperating with our drive to eradicate terrorists.

This blame game has escalated to a “brilliant” child-like argument. Ibrahim breaks Rohan’s toy. Rohan says, “You broke my toy!” Ibrahim says, “No! You broke my toy!” And the argument goes on. This magnifies to a fist fight and finally both ended up with broken teeth and blue eyes. This is exactly what war is going to do to us.

On one side, India is battling the recession, the people’s disbelief in its government and is trying to better the lives of its citizens who are deeply affected by what the year has offered to it. On the other side, Pakistan has sunk deep in debt, its economy being more adversely affected than ours and is struggling to strengthen the new found democratic government.

The terrorists are seeing one success streak after the other. First they awesomely managed to terrorise the world on 26/11. Their bigger aim was to widen the gap between India and Pakistan, and push them to the brink of war. Well! Here we are…They must party-ing in their dungeon…rejoicing the victory of their motive!

We’ve always studied in our history classes that war has done nobody any good. So why is it even an option? Just because we are better equipped to destroy our enemy? When will we mature?

The citizens of either country know deep in their heart of hearts that war is not the answer to their problems. But some of us are just getting carried away by the anger inside us and are not able to find a medium of channelling it. Who is going to save us from falling over the brink?

In 60 blood-soaked hours, you have achieved what we as a nation haven’t achieved in 60 years of independence.
Today, we want answers.
Today, we won’t lie back and wait for someone else to do the job.
Today, we won’t be lulled into inaction by glib talks and subterfuge.
Today we won’t say “chalta Hai “
Today we won’t vote for goons.
Today we will not accept religion or caste or creed, just nationality.
Thank you, terrorists….

In 60 horrifyingly sickening hours, you have awoken a giant that lay asleep for 60 years of sovereignty.
Every Indian will now walk together.
Every Indian will now value his vote.
Every Indian will now demand accountability.
Every Indian will now see through lies and deceit.
Every Indian will now demand explanations.
Every Indian will now stand up to be counted.
Thank you, terrorists…

In 60 gruesome, murderous hours you’ve instilled a pride in us that we couldn’t instill in 60 years of liberty.
You have left behind a reminder that we the people can make a difference.
You have left behind a reason to unite rather than divide.
You have left behind a nation with sheer will & intent.
You have left behind a spirit that dances to a new beat.
You have left behind a billion renewed patriotic hearts.
You have left behind a voice that will be heard.
Thank you, terrorists…

If only you’d let the innocent live & taken the lives of 200 politicians instead…
A humble plea to my fellow Indians
The next time politicians tear down a place of worship; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians divide us on the grounds of religion; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians divide us on the basis of state; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians with criminal records stand for elections; lets label them terrorists.
The next time politicians take kick-backs on arms deals; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians jump parties to grab power, let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians politicize terror; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians twiddle their thumbs while our cities burn; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians capture voting booths; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians accumulate assets disproportionate to their income; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians transfer honest policemen; let’s label them terrorists…
The next time politicians provide substandard equipment to our forces; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians misuse our taxes; let’s call them terrorists.
The next time politicians skip meetings on national security; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians play an opportunistic blame game; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians try every trick in the book to hang on to their “kursis”; let’s label them terrorists.
The next time politicians insult a martyr’s family; let’s label them terrorists

Do “they” have a heart?

Our beloved Mumbai is the city that is so loved throughout the world that everyone wants to have a piece of it. But, some elements mistook Mumbai’s popularity for a battlefield where they can sort out their differences with the world.

Over and over again, our city has been ravished, but we continue to sleep over it. 7 blasts in the trains of Mumbai, and the next day, the city is back to normal. Does this necessarily mean that the city has the never-die spirit or is it the speedy erosion of memory? 3 places in South Mumbai were hijacked, and instead of helping us get out of the terror and get back to normal, the politicians are made to resign. Amidst the terror
stricken citizens of India, unfortunately we have some ridiculous fools trying the rule the country, taking this as a brilliant advantage for their election campaigns.

When I first saw the BJP campaign on Star One I was filled with utter disgust and irritation. Our Home Minister resigns when he was not even involved in the rescue operations. The NSG and Marcos did everything by themselves. Our Chief Minister is being forced to resign, when all he could possibly do at that point in time is sit at home and look. Earlier Mumbai was a battlefield for the terrorists and now the issue has become a blame game for the so-called law preservers of the country. If BJP knew that their opponents were not doing their job then they could have objected earlier! If BJP would have been in Congress’ position would the security have been better? Of course not! All of them are the same.

I have always optimistic about my country and the government ruling it. But now the water is overflowing. There is no room left for any hope of improvement. The real issues that have been highlighted during the terror attack have been side-lined. The people are forced to forget about these and look into the matter of our ridiculous unstable government. The entire issue is a mockery and used as a puppet against Congress. I really wish the entire Parliament House would have been blasted and all the politicians and MPs would have died. That way, the old hags would have nicely gotten done with. All the corruption and manipulation would have gone with them. Their stale minds filled with hay would have suddenly disappeared, opening the opportunity for the youth to take over.

The elections will happen again. Congress will be blamed for everything and BJP will come into power. But what good has BJP done? Didn’t Akshardham happen during Modi’s time, who is a hardcore BJP member? The country has come to a point in its history, where one party is worse than the other. There is a desperate need for a new fresh government.

The real issue

Instead of fighting over petty politics let’s sit down and address the real issue for once. Let’s not forget the people. There will be no one to rule.

Apparently, the cops train only to pass their entrance exams and then sit and eat (everything from food to money) and get awesomely big paunches. They should be asked to train each and everyday. If they are not fit, how can the citizens feel safe? They should be equipped with something better than a 6-bullet pistol. And has the government heard of bullet proof jackets and walky-talkies? Instead of one common one for an entire group, each one should have a separate one for himself.

The NSG is stationed only in Delhi. Why the hell! Are only politicians important for the safety of the integrity of the country? I have never felt the need to spit on the government more than now. If you are running the country then dare not have the audacity to be selfish!

After the blasts in the trains, there were metal detectors installed, only at the socalled important stations of the city. Well do they work…may be not! Are there enough police officials to actually monitor the entry and exit of people in these stations…hell no! What is the government trying to show by this? “Oh we care for our citizens safety”…bullshit!

The big hotels were taken for granted. Did we ever even imagine an attack on the country’s most well-known hotels? The kind of security for its guests is not at all up to the mark. While recruiting staff, is there any verification done of their identity? If “yes” then the terrorists would not have been recruited as chefs. Even when guests come in, shouldn’t there be some sort of verification of their identity as well? Again, the terrorists would not have lived at the Taj as guests!

The most “brilliant” thing that happened during such time is that, there was curfew in the areas near where the terrorists attacked. Instead of thinking of the safety, it became an entertainment arena for some our citizens including Javed Jaffari. Why can’t we understand that the military’s complete attention should be on the safety of the hostages and getting rid of the terrorists? But if we burden them by crowding there, then do they channel their attention towards the safety of those inside or those outside? We desperately need the citizens to be given military training, so that the citizens understand that we aren’t supposed to come in the way of the military and know how to take care of themselves.

And lastly, anything happens in India blame Pakistan. Neither the media nor the politicians are getting the point here. First you remove the terrorists from their roots. And that will not happen without the cooperation of Pakistan. So instead of pointing fingers at them why not join hands with them? Once that’s over then we can move on to the next step of cleaning up the Pakistan government…if there is a real need to do so. The point here is not to support or blame Pakistan, but to remove the common enemy first and then go to the issue of our relations with Pakistan.

I do not have the guts to take on the responsibility of running the country. But I hope my, rather the country’s message goes to the person who truly “cares”!
